Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers builds strong communities, thriving families and children that are healthy, safe and ready to learn by matching parents and caregivers with trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, from prenatal through kindergarten.

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is an evidence-based, early childhood home visiting framework that builds strong communities, thriving families, and children who are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Certified parent educators provide home visiting services which encourage and support parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being in their work with families.
The PAT Model uses four core components to service children and families: Home Visits, Referrals to Community Resources, Health and Child Development Screenings, and Group Connections.
THERE ARE FOUR DYNAMIC COMPONENTS TO THE PARENTS AS TEACHERS MODEL:
  • Personal Visits
  • Group Connections
  • Resource Network
  • Child Screening
TOGETHER, THESE FOUR COMPONENTS FORM A COHESIVE PACKAGE OF SERVICES WITH FOUR PRIMARY GOALS:
  1. Increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve parent practices
  2. Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues
  3. Prevent child abuse and neglect
  4. Increase children’s school readiness and success

Parents as Teachers is about parent/child interaction. PAT is what is known as a home visiting model. Home visiting services are part of a continuum of supports for families of young children that strong communities provide to strengthen families.
The purpose of home visits is to help parents improve their parenting skills, particularly in the child's primary learning environment. Through PAT, parent educators work to build strong families by fostering positive parent-child relationships.
Each visit plan includes a parent-child activity, parenting strategies to promote healthy development, and a focus on family well-being. Parent educators use the newly revised curriculum to provide home visits and guide activities.
The curriculum is grounded in the latest research and consists of parent-child activities, parent handouts, and parent educator resources that are available wherever internet access is available. Childhood literacy is always a part of the home visit.
